At First Steps we aim to provide a happy, caring and stimulating environment where pre-school children feel secure and cared for and where each child feels confident to make friends and develop their individual personality and skills.
The pre-school is registered with Ofsted under the Children Act 1989 for a maximum of 30 children per session in two classrooms, with an adult ratio of 1:4 for children aged 2-3 years and 1:8 for children aged 3-5 years. Read our current OfSTED inspection report here.
We provide a high standard of learning through play with sessions running each morning during term time and on two afternoons. For children between the ages of 2 and 5 years, the pre-school provides a curriculum for the foundation stage of education. There are a wide variety of activities for the children including pre-reading, writing and number work, art, craft, cookery, gardening, imaginative and outside play, music, songs and stories. The pre-school also caters for children’s individual needs for rest and quiet activities during the day.
The pre-school rooms are spacious, warm, light and airy with wood block flooring, low surface temperature radiators, display boards and security locks to doors. There is direct access to an internal courtyard for sand and water play pits in summer. A walled external play area is also available for outdoor games, bikes etc. There are private low-level children’s toilets and hand basins with paper towels, and easy access to a disabled toilet.
